In the beginning God created… Genesis 1:1
Let me introduce you to Greta oto, the “Glasswing” butterfly. As you quickly observe this butterfly’s wings are almost completely transparent. That’s right, you can see right through them!
This trait makes this butterfly quite unique and adds additional fascination to yet another one of God’s magnificent creations.
Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind…” Genesis 1:24
The Glasswing appears to be a delicate looking creature, but it proves to be just as resilient as its colorful cousins. It is one of the few species of butterflies that make
long migrations (up to 12 miles per day) and participates in lekking, a gathering (arena style) of males for the competitive purpose of courtship display (click on link to learn more about this fascinating gathering).
Then God said, “I have given you everything that moves on earth…” Genesis 1:29
For defense purposes, Greta oto is not able to use the disguise of color to escape from would be predators. Instead, this unusual butterfly utilizes its transparency by hiding itself in plain sight. It simply blends into the background making it virtually invisible and difficult to see.
In addition, the toxins in plants that Greta oto consumed as a caterpillar (nightshade/solanum) transfers into its adult tissue as distasteful alkaloids. Needless to say it is not high on the flavor list and avoided by most birds.
God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. Genesis 1:30
For you to see this intriguing little gem, up close, and personal, will require a trip – destination – the South American Rainforest (Mexico to Panama), where little Greta oto can be seen quiet commonly feasting on the nectar of tropical rain-forest flowers while fluttering its translucent shimmery wings in the sunlight like polished panes of glass.
For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised… 1Chronicles 16:25
Just when I think I’ve seen it all, either in person or picture, I am more than pleasantly surprised to find that I am just a novice observer in a world that I sometimes take for granted.
Then God blessed them saying” Be fruitful and multiply…” Genesis 1:28
