What If?

I was driving to work this morning when a familiar song came on the radio.  It wasn’t a new tune to me and I have sung the lyrics many times. But this morning my music autopilot became disengaged and a switch in my head went from hearing to listening.  The lyrics became words and the words became a message and the message required an answer.

img_3142The message isn’t complicated or hard to grasp but it does probe the listener to make a decision.  The decision to answer a question.  To draw a line in the sand and make a choice as to which side of the line that you will stand beside.  To choose that it is or it is not – there is no in between.

That is what faith is.  A choice.  There is nothing scholarly about it and you either elect it or not, there is no in between.  You either believe or you don’t. Jesus is either who he said he is, the son of God, the savior of mankind or he isn’t.  It’s just that simple.

Below, are the words that filled my car with this pondering message pertaining to Jesus.  What if?

What if you’re right, and He was just another nice guy
What if you’re right, what if it’s true
They say the cross will only make a fool of you
And what if it’s true
What if He takes his place in history
With all the prophets and the kings
Who taught us love and came in peace
But then the story ends
What then

But what if you’re wrong
What if there’s more
What if there’s hope you never dreamed of hoping for
What if you jump, just close your eyes
What if the arms that catch you, catch you by surprise
What if he’s more than enough
What if it’s love

What if you dig way down deeper
Than your simple minded friends
What if you dig
What if you find
A thousand more unanswered questions down inside
That’s all you’d find

What if you pick apart the logic
And begin to poke the holes
What if the crown of thorns is no more than folklore
That must be told and retold

But what if you’re wrong
What if there’s more
What if there’s hope you never dreamed of hoping for
What if you jump, just close your eyes
What if the arms that catch you, catch you by surprise
What if he’s more than enough
What if it’s love

You’ve been running as fast as you can
And you’ve been looking for a place you can land
For so long

But what if you’re wrong
What if you jump, just close you’re eyes
What if the arms that catch you, catch you by surprise
What if he’s more than enough
What if it’s love

What if it’s love – written by Nicole Nordeman

In conclusion: I was asked a question one time which went like this;

“Donna, what if Jesus isn’t the son of God, or that God and this whole thing about needing redemption from your “sins” doesn’t exist.  Don’t you think that you have wasted your time in believing in something that “might be?”  I responded, “why no.” They replied, “how can you say that?” I said, “If Jesus was a mere man, who suffered in agony on my behalf in vain, and there is no God, then when my life ceases to exist,  I am no worst off then you who doesn’t believe.  But if Jesus is the son of God who redeemed my soul from the consequences of my sin, and God is real, then I have everything to gain when my physical life ceases on this earth. Therefore, the way I see it, I have nothing to lose in believing but everything to gain.”

Then I asked him a question.  “But what about you. Can you say the same?”

The line in the sand has been drawn.  Which side will you stand on.  The side of belief or disbelief?
