The Static is Getting Loud

The volume on the static of intolerance is being turned up, but in what or in whom?

Early history, from cave drawings, scrolls, hieroglyphics, stone carvings etc., records that mankind from all parts of the globe and civilizations (primitive and advanced) believed/believes in a deity.

This belief was/is embraced by the rich and poor, educated and uneducated, kings and peasants, and all races. Worship, sacrifice, praise, prayers, and offerings have all been given to God or the gods and continue to do so to this present day (click here for a list of the religious populations of the world).

I must also mention that disbelief in God is not a new concept and has been around for many many centuries.  As long as there has been a belief in God I am sure that their has also been a disbelief in him. The two seem to go hand in hand.  It’s just the way mankind is and for the most part the two have agreed to disagree.

However, something else is developing. In the years that my life on this earth has circled the sun, belief in God has been a steady and acceptable practice. But over the last few years a spirit of intolerance is on the rise.  Prejudice and labeling is becoming increasingly prevalent and it seems to have a target.  But not all religions are in the cross-hairs.  So lets find out which one is.

Top five religions of the world (not in order of popularity). source – Wikipedia

Overview:

  1. Hinduism –  Most are vegetarians because of their belief in reincarnation which is the religious or philosophical concept that the soul or spirit, after biological death, begins a new life in a new body that may be human, animal or spiritual depending on the moral quality of the previous life’s actions. In their eyes all living beings, humans and animals should be treated equally with respect. The main goal of the Hindu religion is to become one with Brahman, the creator.
  2. Judaism – The first monotheistic religion – the belief that God is one.  The Jewish people believe that the Torah (first five books of the Hebrew Bible) is where God revealed himself and entered into a covenant relationship with them.  They are bound to Mosaic law in which God’s ten commandments are a part.  They await the coming of God’s Messiah who will restore Gods’ kingdom on earth and rule in peace.
  3. Buddhism – See nirvana a religious teaching propagated by the Buddha and his followers, which declares that by destroying greed, hatred, and delusion, which are the causes of all suffering, man can attain perfect enlightenment.
  4. Christianity – is a monotheistic belief in one God and the redemption of man through the sacrificial death of God’s only son Jesus the Christ. The mainstream Christian belief is that Jesus is the Son of God, fully divine and fully human and the savior of humanity. Because of this, Christians commonly refer to Jesus as Christ or Messiah. Jesus’ ministry, sacrificial death, and subsequent resurrection are often referred to as the Gospel, meaning “Good News” (from the Greek: εὐαγγέλιον euangélion). In short, the Gospel is news of God the Father’s eternal victory over evil, and the promise of salvation and eternal life for all people, through divine grace.
  5. IslamIslam’s most fundamental concept is a rigorous monotheism, called tawhīd (Arabic: توحيد‎). God is described in chapter 112 of the Qur’an as:[26] “Say: He is God, the One and Only; God, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is He begotten; And there is none like unto Him.” (112:1-4) Muslims repudiate the Christian doctrine of the Trinity and divinity of Jesus, comparing it to polytheism.  In Islam, God is beyond all comprehension and Muslims are not expected to visualize God. Muslims believe all mankind will be judged on their good and bad deeds and must follow  The Five Pillars of Islam which are considered obligatory for all believers.

As I live my everyday life out and about I either overhear, read, or witness on television the growing intolerance and hatred towards one of the five religions mentioned above.  For years it has been quiet static lurking in the background but the volume is increasing.  The static is getting loud and as I mentioned earlier it has a target.

Have you guessed which one of the top five religions it is?  Which one do you think is in the cross-hairs and is being accused of being intolerant, prejudice, judgmental and condemning?  That those who are followers of it are unintelligent simple-minded bigots who are a danger to society and the progression of man?

I’ll give you a hint, it is the one that offers forgiveness, unconditional love, mercy, grace and salvation.  It is extended to all…ALL..people and does not judge nor hate. There is no respecter of person and is not based on works, gender or race.  It says to come as you are (blemishes and all) and that it can forgive your deepest sins. You can not earn what it has to offer but what it offers is free to anyone that accepts and asks for it.  It is a gift and all one has to do to receive it is to repent.

Does that sound like what it is being accused of?  Would the one sharing that information be a danger or threat to society? The religion in question is Christianity.  So why do you think its is being attacked?  Please post your answer below.

  1. By far one of the best posts I have read! It stirred something within me that I haven’t felt in a long time. Pity in meaning, sympathy. Pity for those who do not understand, yet wield hatred in their heart towards those offering love. It is the ultimate sacrifice of the Christian believer to keep standing in their faith despite the mistreatment, and judgements that are given. It means pressing forward in the face of ignorance and pursecution all while maintaining a firm, but loving faith. It is the best testimony a Christian can share. Greater than words. Although some individuals will hate for the sheer fact of hating, our reactions towards them, and firm faith will have more of an impact than our words ever will. Unfortunately the world has seen a inconsistency in the Christian faith born from the ‘reglious’ person claiming to be a Christ follower. In the Bible they called them Pharisees. The people of this world have seen those who claim to be Christians live their lives as a Pharisee. Committing various sins, and cloaking it under the church. Its wrong, and all those who do so are wrong but in the end it is human. Humankind is sinful, and is the entire reason why Christ came. He came to forgive us of our sins even our hypocrisy. In reality I have to remind people that being a Christian doesn’t make me perfect. It makes me an imperfect person with a perfect destiny. The whole point is that ‘we’ do nothing to deserve the beauty of enternal life. It is a gift, not of works. My only hope is that we as Christians can start living a bigger life on actions not words. That we wont claim to be perfect or act as if we are perfect which comes off self-righteous, and judgemental. I feel now is the time, more than ever, to stand up and be faithful. To say what is right with grace, and delivered in love.

  2. Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6 What is it about truth that disturbs our world so much? It’s not a hard truth and it is open to anyone that will accept this truth. People are so eager to grasp hold of a belief/truth that requires so much more of them. The basic truth seems to frighten so many people. The way of salvation was made so simple so that “whosoever” could come to know truth. I will ever be indebted to family, Sunday School, VBS teachers etc. who cared enough to teach me the simplicity of this simple, yet profound truth. All roads do not lead to truth. Jesus is the only way! This is not my opinion. It is truth! As the days grow darker and my truth is being questioned and attacked, I pray for the courage and strength to stand and walk in the truth of God’s Word. The way of the cross is my truth and while some days it may boggle my mind of how much I am loved by a Savior that gave up everything to purchase my redemption, it also captivates my heart. I am forever indebted to a Savior that came across the flaming stars knowing that He would return with crimson scars, all for me. If it had only been me, He would have still come. I do understand completely and fully, that this truth and
    “Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.”

I couldn’t have said it any better. Thanks Melody

  3. “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
I believe Christianity is the most attacked belief. I don’t like calling it a religion, because, to me, religion is a system under which man tries to work his way toward acceptance by God, or the higher power of that religion. Christianity is a relationship with Christ, and God has done everything that is necessary for us to gain acceptance into Heaven by sending His Son to die on the cross for our sins. I think one of the main reasons Christianity is attacked so much is that the devil stirs up as many people as he can against Christians, because he knows that there is one God and that accepting salvation through His Son is the only way to get into Heaven. (See James 2:19). The devil wants to keep as many as possible OUT of Heaven, so he does his best to attack anyone who is trying to help people get into Heaven. Some people hate the fact that we Christians say there is only one way into heaven, rather than the many other ways that people of other religions say there are to get there; but we are just quoting what the Bible says. Christians are also maligned because they say there is only one God, but, again, that is what the Bible says. I think the devil is behind some of the attacks of the Jewish people too, because he knows they are God’s chosen people. He would love to wipe out the Jewish race, but God has protected them all throughout history.

This sums it up. Thanks Mark
