The Introvert Artist

chrisriceWeak and wounded sinner … Lost and left to die …O raise your head…for love is passing by…Come to Jesus…Come to Jesus …Come to Jesus…and live.

Come to Jesus, a song considered to be a modern day hymn was written and produced in 2003 on the album Run The Earth – Watch The Sky by Chris Rice. Though the song is 11 years old, Its message of comfort and encouragement is timeless.

Now your burden’s lifted…And carried far away…And precious blood has washed away the stain, so Sing to Jesus…Sing to Jesus…Sing to Jesus…and live.

Chris Rice was born in Clifton Maryland and began writing songs while he was leading music and coaching high school soccer teams.

Being a self professed introvert, Chris did not aspire to have a career in the music industry. However, little did he know, in spite of his shy and introverted personality, that simple invitations to speak and lead music for his church and college youth groups was God gently leading him into a full-time music career.

In the mid 1980’s Chris’s songs began to be recorded by artists such as, Kathy Troccoli, Terri Gibbs, Amy Grant, Josh Tesh, and Michael W. Smith. In fact when Michael W. Smith began Rocketown Records in 1996, he signed Chris Rice as its first artist.

And like a newborn baby…Don’t be afraid to crawl…And remember when you walk…Sometimes we fall…so Fall on Jesus…Fall on Jesus…Fall on Jesus and live.

What I find intriguing about Chris Rice, beyond his extreme gift to write deep and meaningful lyrics set to catchy tunes, is the fact that as a shy and introverted person, he stretched beyond his comfort zone to answer God’s leading and call in his life.

Who would have thought that this artist, who sang in front of thousands of people for 15 years, would have preferred to remain in the background, strumming his guitar in the comfort of his bedroom. In his words, Chris relates in his Autobio his feeling of being in the public eye:

Interviews? Live radio? Shaking hands and making conversation with hundreds of strangers every night after shows? His worst nightmares all rolled into his real life!

The last album Chris produced was in 2007 titled, What a Heart Is Beating For. Since that time he has enjoyed a quiet life in a small town in Tennessee enjoying regular visit to local coffee shops, rock climbing and co-writing some song with his friends.

Sometimes the way is lonely…And steep and filled with pain…So if your sky is dark and pours the rain, then…Cry to Jesus…Cry to Jesus…Cry to Jesus and live!

O, and when the love spills over…And music fills the night…And when you can’t contain your joy inside, then…Dance for Jesus…Dance for Jesus…Dance for Jesus and live!

Though Chris has, for now, moved out of the view of the public’s eye, he has left us with timeless messages of God’s restorative and redeeming love. His music will forever resonate and minister to those whose compass is fixed on the Author of life and the savior of their soul.

With that said, if you are not familiar with Chris Rice or his music, I encourage you to get to know him better at http://chrisrice.com. You will not be disappointed by the Introvert Artist that God used to bring messages of encouragement and love.

And with your final heartbeat…Kiss the world goodbye…Then go in peace, and laugh on Glory’s side, and…Fly to Jesus…Fly to Jesus…Fly to Jesus and live!
