You know all our hopes…Lord, you know all our fears…
And words cannot express the love we feel, but we long for You to hear
Everyday, every hour, in all kinds of languages throughout the world, songs of praise and worship are being played. Songs that sing of God’s grace, His love, His majesty and power. Praises for His goodness, His mercy, His healing, deliverance, and restoration. Songs, choruses, anthems, and ballads continuously being played to honor and praise God.
Words being played and words being sung are good. They bring us to a place of reflection and help us focus on how great and awesome God is. But does merely singing words of adoration and gratitude to God constitute worship and praise?
This question may challenges some of us because if we are honest, it might be how we “worship” every Sunday, simply reciting words in lyrical form as our expression of praise and worship. But worship is more than that.
Worship is a time of intentional engagement. To engage our spirit with God’s. To bring Him an offering. An offering of love and adoration that springs from the depths of our soul. Worship is an expression of the heart – loving the One who loves us.
Singing with our lips and singing from our heart – two approaches with two separate and distinct deliveries. Both may sound beautiful and pleasant to the ears, but one is ritualistic, mechanical and mundane while the other is a true offering worthy of acceptance.
I believe that songs, on pitch or not, when sung from the heart to offer praise and worship soar to heaven and fills the ears of God. Any other just fills the ceilings of the room.
Ceiling or Heaven – a choice you will make.
1 Samuel 16:7b “…for the Lord sees not as man sees. For man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
If words could fall like rain…From these lips of mine
And if I had a thousand years…I would still run out of time
So if You listen to my heart…Every beat would say,
“Thank You for the Life, thank You for the Truth, thank You for the Way.”
So listen to our hearts (oh, Lord, please listen) Hear our spirits sing…
A song of praise that flows…From those You have redeemed
We will use the words we know…To tell You what an awesome God You are
But words are not enough…To tell You of our love…So listen to our hearts
